13th NEU-KKU International Conference on Socio-Economic and Environmental Issues in Development (ICSEED 2021)

On June 10, 2021, the National Economics University, supported by the Faculty of Environmental, Climate Change and Urban studies, collaborated with Khon Khaen University, Thailand to co-host the 13th NEU-KKU international conference on Socio-Economic and Environmental Issues in Development (ICSEED 2021).

From national and international experts, the conference welcomed Prof. Hsu Hui Huang – Director of the Science Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vietnam (TECO); Dr. Paul Burke, Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University; Dr. Can Van Luc, Chief Economist of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) cum Director of BIDV Training and Research Institute, member of the National Fiscal and Monetary Policy Advisory Council and a member of Vietnam National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (VNCPEC). From National Economics University, the conference welcomed Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong, president of National Economics University, chairman of ICSEED 2021, Prof. Dr. Tran Tho Dat, president of the Scientific Council, National Economics University; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Duc Truong – Dean of Faculty of Environmental, Climate Change and Urban studies; together with the representatives of departments, faculties, institutes, socio-political organizations, universities, experts, scientists and students via offline and online channels (supported by Microsoft Teams).

At the opening of the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong presented that in the context of extensive international integration, the National Economics University has always proactively cooperated with other universities and organizations of many countries in the region and over the world, to co-organize trainings and transfer scientific and technological advances. This international conference is one part of the development process in international cooperation. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong hopes that through the conference, the National Economics University will have more opportunities to enhance experience in training, teaching, research and consulting for policy making; also to strengthen international cooperation in training and scientific research between regional and international universities; thereby, to offer some useful solutions in policy consultation, contributing to the development of the two countries, Thailand and Vietnam. The Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong also expressed his appreciation to the Faculty of Environmental, Climate Change and Urban studies for successfully organizing the seminar and ensuring the regulations on safety during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Through the online channel, Assoc. Dr. Orthai Piayura – Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUSO), Khon Khaen University, Thailand expressed her regret at the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic that prevented lecturers and researchers from going to the conference in Vietnam. Assoc. Dr. Orathai thanked the authors and delegates who attended the seminar, and expressed hopes that the conference will be a great success and deepen the long-term friendship between National Economics and Khon Kaen University.

The conference was honored to welcome Dr. Can Van Luc, Chief Economist of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) to present about Vietnam Economic Outlook in 2021 amid the Covid-19. According to Dr. Can Van Luc, chief economist, under the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the world economy entered a serious recession in 2020. The service sector is most affected by the pandemic, followed by manufacturing, construction and agriculture. Dr. Can Van Luc expressed that the global economic recovery depends on three conditions: the ability to control the epidemic, vaccinate on a large scale, and the effectiveness of economic supports from the government and international cooperation. In general, Vietnam still has many advantages as one of the rare countries that achieved positive growth in 2020. However, the country economy still faces many risks. In the new context after the pandemic, Dr. Can Van Luc presented that the challenge to the enterprise development is huge. Business strategies in the current context need to be restructured, and products need changing according to new demands of market. At the same time, businesses need to enhance digital transformation, build their own ecosystem and participate in global production value chains.

In the presentation about Clean Energy Opportunities in Vietnam, Dr. Paul Burke from Arndt-Corden Department of Economics – Crawford School of Public Policy – ANU, presented that in recent years, clean energy has been researched and encouraged to be applied worldwide, in order to reduce dependence on oil, from then reduce environmental pollution. Clean energy also has been considered an effective solution to limit global warming. Besides, Vietnam is a country with potential and opportunities to develop clean energy. Therefore, the development of renewable energy and green energy is becoming urgent and important, not only for immediate goals but also in the long term, to ensure national energy security.

Prof. Dr. Hsu Hui Huang presented that artificial intelligence is gradually entering all areas of human life. However, there are still many new problems about artificial intelligence that we do not fully understand. With the advanced level of scientific and technological development, artificial intelligence is able to do jobs that were originally done by humans and even bring higher efficiency. Therefore, mastering the basic knowledge and understanding the application of artificial intelligence in daily life becomes more important and necessary.

13th NEU-KKU International Conference on Socio-Economic and Environmental Issues in Development (ICSEED 2021) has attracted the participation of many national and international scientists with 160 research papers in 9 main fields, including: Development and integration economics; Business Administration; Information technology and digital economy; Natural resources, environment and climate change; Management and development of regions and urban areas; Laws and institutions; Social and humanities issues; Sustainable Development; The socio-economic impacts of Covid-19 pandemic. The conference is an opportunity for experts and scientists to exchange their findings, opinions, perspectives on current issues. The conference was a great success with many proposed effective policy tools and solutions, contributing to solving development problems, towards a more stable, effective and sustainable region, country and the whole world. In the afternoon, parallel presentations were held through online channel via Microsoft Teams.
